The Mighty Babe

Picture
Robert Thom, Unknown

Babe Ruth was one of Baseball’s most well known figures. This painting depicts an incident in 1932 when Ruth supposedly pointed to the center field and declared he would hit a home run to that point. When the next pitch was thrown, Ruth hit a home run to the exact point in center field that he had indicated.

Lines are a vital part of art. By directing lines in a certain direction, the artist can draw the viewers’ attention to specific points in the image. The lines in this painting are not just the lines of the baseball diamond, but also the lines of the figures in the image. Ruth himself is a straight line in the center of the picture with his outstretched arm working as a diagonal through the image. Any time two lines cross forming and X the human eye is going to be more attracted to that point. To try your own hand at creating artwork with strong lines, check out “Baseline” in Caught Looking.
