Listening to the World Series

Picture
Steven Dohanos, 1952

Before the days of ESPN, Americans tuned into their radios to hear the latest scores. Baseball was first broadcast over the airwaves in the 1920s. This painting comes from the so called Golden Age of radio which stretched from the 1940’s through the mid 1950’s.

This image, like those by Rockwell, was a cover for The Saturday Evening Post. It is listed by the Post as “Linemen Listening to World Series.” The drawing captures a particular period of time in American history and can be used as a cultural study. What similarities and differences can you find between this image and a group of modern day American’s enjoying a baseball game?
